Hello everybody, welcome to the five minutes PM Podcast! This podcast is I'm trying to no, sir. One email that I received with a Podcast suggestion asked me how many projects approach IT Manager can handle and manage at the same time. And then to start, I like to give you the answer. There is no answer. It's impossible for me to say, Oh, it's street, or it's ten, or it's one.
So let's try to not have to explain why there is no answer in the EDL and the perfect word in paradise. One project manager should be manager one project. This is that having. But when I tell you that, you start to think this is crazy, what he got. He is telling me I have 300 projects here in my company.
So he, good is asking me to hire 300 project managers. No, real life is different. So the ETL ward, it's one project manager per project, but in the real world, it's completely different. But in some ways, I can help you to address this. What will increase the ability of a project manager to handle more than a project than one product first similarity?
If I have several projects with that, approximately the same, the scope with approximately the same thing, the same team with approximately the same geographic distribution and the same complexity, not extremely high complexity. Maybe I can handle them together because of the synergy in our scope; I can take parts of one project and help me as an object too.
A lot of projects, but win. I have an extremely dispersed geographically Project, so I have one Project here in Brazil. I have another project in USAA, not a project in Saudi Arabia, and all of them one in all, your daughter is aerospace and defence. It's impossible to have the person handling all of this. Even the best Project man Manager in the planet can not do that.
So what will happen to people to manage multiple projects is the similarity. So look, let me think about an example in there and it for you let's suppose that my company, the followup software for the web. Okay. And my company used pretty much the same technology. The theme is pretty much the same, and the kind of customer it's okay. It's different, but it's no different.
Then what I can do, I can maybe have a project manager manage five, six, seven different projects to help them to deliver and the results because the teams is the same soul. It's like a group. It's like a program on that, but it's impossible to have a project manager managing highly complex projects and sharing there. And he's a hard time with food projects, completely irrelevant.
So we need to understand that sometimes the project value shows higher that I will need to have only one project manager. And he says cost or hair costs. It's pointless. If you were managing a moot billion-dollar project, you would be completely crazy if you started sharing resources because the project manager is nothing; the cost of this competence, his nothing for the size of the project. But on the other hand, if I have a lot of, there is more projects, very cheap projects.
Then maybe I need to have someone sharing this because otherwise, the cost will become my business invaluable. So does this work? We need to understand M to finish this podcast is very important. We also need to review what does Project because I heard a lot of clients and a lot of people to know; oh, my company has something like 12,000 projects. So there is no company. Again, there is no company in the planet that has 12,000 projects.
And why I'm telling you that. Because if we go to the definition of Project, everything is a product include the recording of this podcast. But do you think about that? I do approach a Charter's scope statement, WBS, to record five minutes. Podcast no, I'm doing pros at management, but I'm doing this completely formal in my mind. So the company must understand that Project, it's something that I know and it has relevance or otherwise the lady or the gentleman that clean our meeting room, they can say, Oh, this is a Project because Today is different from yesterday.
Because today they used flip-chart yesterday. Not so much; this is irrelevant in this context. So we need to first understand what this product is, and then we need to see if we have some similarities that we can have a project manager that could have the responsibility for sharing projects for two, for three, for four projects. So there's the answer to that. I want that You to go home understanding that, but the highly complex project, for sure.
We need to have only one project manager and one excellent brilliant project manager, or otherwise, we'll be on the path to failure. I hope you enjoyed this podcast. See you next week with another five minutes PM. Podcast.
