Ricardo (4s): Hello, everyone. Welcome to the five Minutes PM podcast. The first podcast of 2018. And as I do every year, I want to share with you some advice, some thoughts I have in mind for this upcoming year. Of course, I'm not an expert on this field. I'm not capable of imagine how the future will be. So I'm sharing with you my own perception on that. And of course, to look forward, I need to look back. If we look back to 2017, what we can see, and this is a very big trend. It's the instability and volatility. I'm seeing that change. That was a process is becoming permanent.
Ricardo (45s): So we change everything every time. So when an organization is restructuring, when it's over it starts a new one. And maybe even before it's over it, start a new one. What we can see? We can see a massive amount of innovation in the technology sector. We see a massive challenge in the global environment, then the political environment. So in the middle of that, it's, you and it's me. So we are trying to figure out what we could do to improve our business, to improve organizations and to improve professionally too. So what I want to share with you now, it's three points. Plus one behavior that will drive me.
Ricardo (1m 28s): And I suggest that drives you towards 2018, the first one its to stay in, tune it with technology. And that I'm not saying that you should shift your work to work on technologies, but you need to understand the impact of the technology in your life and your business. I'm not saying just a Oh, artificial intelligence, AI machine learning bots. No, no it's above and beyond that artificial intelligence, we talk about that for years and years and why? Busy, I decided to talk more about that. I decided to put this on one of my topics for 2018, it's because it's shifting dramatically.
Ricardo (2m 12s): The focus of the intelligence in the past machines would take jobs of low qualified jobs, repeatable process. With theincrease off the capability of computers. There is a big trend of machines taking the work and doing the work of what we call white collar and white collar automation. So we are talking about a much more intelligent steps. So if you see alpha zero in alpha, one of the machine learning our teams from Google, they learned how to play chess in four hours and in eight hours, something like that, they find not wrong.
Ricardo (2m 53s): Okay. They were defeating basically all champions. So that means the game is over the machine can control everything and can forecast not the next 10 moves or not the next a thousand moves, but the next infinite moves. So it becomes just impossible today to defeat a machine like that. Also, we have the blockchain technology and the blockchain changing everything. And if you think about that as a project manager, so you have? All the ladder, all of the legacy, all the baselines, that will be like a blockchain. So look, that it's a massive change in the way we do work, in how we can fulfill our promises on the planning side.
Ricardo (3m 41s): So stay tuned to that. I'm not saying that you should jump into the technology arena, but stay tuned with technology and see how it can affect you. So read more, read wired magazine, read some blogs about technology. Watch some videos about technology and get getting touched on what is going on there because it will affect your job and my job for sure. The second one is about decision. You should decide fast and and in the nimble way. So you need to be nimble and fast. Why? Because today's marketplace, we don't have time to take months to decide on something because the thing's changed so dramatically that when you decide your decision is completely obsolete, so you need to decide fast.
Ricardo (4m 33s): And in order to decide fast, you need to become more comfortable of deciding without the full information. And this is that one of our biggest challenge is because we love to decide with 100% precision and this does not exist anymore. You should read a book that is, it's not a new book, but it's a wonderful book called Blink from Malcolm Gladwell. He wrote fantastically well about how you can decide and get insights for your decision that do not require a massive amount of information so you can decide fast. And of course you need to change your behavior on the decision because people do not like to decide because they need to have the ownership of their decisions.
Ricardo (5m 20s): Third open the scope of your work opened the scope, learn something new. I not saying that you should shift your career to a different path, but you should open. Don't be strict. You need to open. For example, last year I started studying dramatically strategy implementation disconnection, because this was part of my work. And this is an incredible knew field for me. So you can study things related to the work you do, change management, you can study something on tecnology, but open your opportunities.
Ricardo (6m 2s): Don't be narrow on your view about the work you were doing. You need to open because this is, is we'll be at risk mitigation strategy, or if something different comes out of this volatility towards your job or towards your life. So you need to open your mat. This is why I love to suggest that people start travelling more, and travel to different places visit, talk to different people, discuss with different cultures. Do not talk only with people you agree a hundred percent. So learn something new because this will be your main asset in the future. And the fourth that I say that is, it's not just the suggestion, but more a behavior manage your fears.
Ricardo (6m 47s): What I can see is that people are really afraid of what's going on. The word is so unstable and is so volatile is that people tend to become very afraid of what I should do, how I should do. So take it easy. Most of the word, most 99.9% .99 of the people are afraid, including myself, but you need to manage this. This sense of fear It's great because it forces you to move, but it cannot be so dramatic. That creates a panic that creates a state that you do not do anything because you are dominated by fear.
Ricardo (7m 30s): Think about that in 2018 transform ideas into action. So remember studied technology, learn a little bit more, learn how to decide fast and how to be agile and opened the scope of your work. This three things with a very good management off your panic, it will conduct you nicely and prepared for the future. Happy new year and see you next week with another five minutes PM Podcast.
